Administering Windows NT 4.0
Server and Workstation
A 4-day hands-on course

Introduction
This course provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform post-installation and day-to-day administration tasks in a single-domain or multiple-domain NT Server–based network. Clients are assumed to be Windows 9x or NT Workstation.

The course concentrates on the day-to day requirements of maintaining an NT network and covers the user interface, network connections, file security and centralised management.

The course starts with an overview of NT covering both workstation and server, the role of domains and workgroups are compared. This is followed by installation considerations. The next section covers users, groups and file security with the objective of providing a safe and secure computing environment.

The course will cover both peer-peer and server based networking as well as configuration of DOS and Windows 3 applications. Key sessions cover management of NT workstation centrally including editing the registry, using profiles and using system policies. The course will finish by looking at the NT tools e.g. Event Viewer and performance monitor as well as troubleshooting issues.

Who should attend
This course is primarily intended for those who administer Microsoft Windows NT Server and NT Workstation as well as those who are on the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer Windows NT 4.0 Track. The course will also appeal to:

Support & Help Desk personnel who need a real understanding of Windows NT, its configuration and integration into NT networks.

PC Managers who need a more than cursory understanding of NT Server and Workstation.

Power Users who really want to get to know Windows NT.

Hands-on
This is a hands-on course; each participant will build an NT server, create users and groups and assign rights and permissions. A domain will be created with both primary and backup controllers and then a multi domain network will be established.

Hands-on exercises (include)

Install NT (as both a PDC and BDC)
Create user accounts
Create a user login script
Determine user account policies
Create user profiles
Using System Policy Editor
Promote a BDC to a PDC
Synchronise two Domain controllers
Set up directory replication
Install and configure TCP/IP
Checking the network installation
Joining a Domain
Set up a trust relation ship between two domains
Set up and test Remote Access (RAS)
Using the Registry and Registry editor.
Monitor performance parameters
Create a boot floppy and ERD
Using automated and server based setups.

Pre-requisites
Participants are assumed to be familiar with the Windows NT or Windows 95 user interface and to be familiar with a networked environment. If you are in doubt please call our Support Desk on 020 8810 9662.

Course Overview
The course starts with an installation of Windows NT. A series of hands-on exercises then leads us through the various tasks met on a day-to-day basis on a typical network. Tasks include: Create and administer user and group accounts. Join a Domain and determine account policies. Identify and troubleshoot problems that prevent users from logging on to the network. Manage network resources, set up and administer permissions for files and folders. Set up a printing environment, administer printers, and troubleshoot basic printer problems. Use auditing functions to generate and view security logs, monitor network resources to track usage and disk space. Identify and use troubleshooting aids. Create a multi-domain environment.
