Administering Windows 2000 
Professional and Server

A 5-day hands-on course

Introduction
This course provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform post-installation and day-to-day administration tasks in a single-domain Windows 2000 Server–based network. Clients are assumed to be Windows 9x or Windows 2000 professional.

The course concentrates on the day-to day requirements of maintaining a Windows 2000 network and covers the user interface, network connections, file security, centralised management, printing and troubleshooting.

The course starts with an overview of Windows 2000 covering professional and server, the role of domains and workgroups are compared. This is followed by installation considerations. The next section covers users, groups and file security with the objective of providing a safe and secure computing environment.

Key sessions cover management of Windows 2000 professional including editing the registry, using profiles and policies. The course will finish by looking at the Windows 2000 tools e.g. Event Viewer and System Monitor as well as troubleshooting issues.

Pre-requisites
Participants are assumed to be familiar with the Windows NT or Windows 9x user interface and to be familiar with a networked environment. Some experience with Windows NT would be useful. If you need help call us on 020 88109662.

 

Hands-on
This is a hands-on course; each participant will install Windows 2000, create users and groups and assign rights and permissions. A domain will be created and the computers will then join that domain.

Course Overview
The course starts with an installation of Windows 2000. A series of hands-on exercises then leads us through the various tasks met on a day-to-day basis on a typical network. Tasks include: Create and administer user and group accounts. Join a Domain and determine account policies. Identify and troubleshoot problems that prevent users from logging on to the network. Manage network resources, set up and administer permissions for files and folders. Set up a printing environment, administer printers, and troubleshoot basic printer problems. Use auditing functions to generate and view security logs, monitor network resources to track usage and disk space. Identify and use troubleshooting aids.
